Nollywood actress, Moji Olaiya, to be buried June 7

The body of Moji Olaiya, the popular Nigerian actress who died last month in Canada, will arrive Nigeria on Tuesday ahead of her funeral.

The actress will be buried on June 7 at Ebony Vault, Ikoyi Cemetery in Lagos after a brief lying in state that will take place on June 6.

Moji’s two-month-old daughter will also make the trip back to Nigeria, Yomi Fabiyi, the publicity secretary of the late Moji Olaiya burial committee, disclosed this in a statement Saturday.

Veteran Yoruba movie actress, Faithia Balogun, heads the committee while actress, Foluke Daramola, is the secretary.

In the statement, Mr. Fabiyi, an actor, said the details of Nigeria-bound flight itinerary would not be disclosed because of the baby involved. Hence, her arrival will be private and low-key.

A memorial service and Artiste Night will hold the same day of her arrival in Lagos.

The actress passed away on May 17 after suffering a cardiac arrest in Canada. She had only been delivered of a baby girl two months earlier.

Moji was scheduled for burial the following day in compliance with Islamic rites. Her burial was however shelved at the last minute because her 18-year-old daughter insisted her body be returned to Nigeria.

Given the financial implications of flying her corpse back to Nigeria, her family, friends and colleagues sought the assistance of the Ekiti State government where the deceased hailed from.

The state did not provide the support.

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Bola Tinubu, later offered to pay for the return of Moji’s body.

The actress’ death sent a shock wave across the Nigerian entertainment industry.

Moji started her acting career when she took on a role as Ireti in a Wale Adenuga’s Super Story series “No Pain, No Gain”. Following this, the first feature movie she acted in was “Sunmibare” which was produced by Dimeji Ijaduade.

She starred in several Nollywood and Yoruba films. She was known for her roles in films such as No Pains No Gains, in which she played Ireti, Sade Blade (2005),Nkan adun (2008) and Omo Iya Meta Leyi (2009). She also starred in the Agunbaniro, and she won the Best New Actress Award.

In 2016, Olaiya released a film, Iya Okomi that featured Foluke Daramola and Funsho Adeolu. The movie was premiered in Lagos on July 2016.
